DIY Sweat Shorts & Crop Top Matching Set From Old Sweatpants (Easy Sewing!)

Sweat shorts have been trending for some time, and I just love any opportunity to make a two-piece matching set. Here's how I transformed a pair of sweatpants into a cute crop top and sweat shorts set with some simple sewing (and a little bling)!

Gather Materials

Step 1: Cut Shorts

Cut shorts to your desired length.

For some bling, I used fabric glue to line the pockets and added the crystal chain trim.

Fold the bottom of the shorts up about 1/4 inch and clip in place.

Step 2: Create Top Base

Create the base of the top by cutting the pant leg pieces open. Then clip then right-side-together to create a rectangular tube top base.

Step 3: Create Straps

Cut straps from the excess pieces of fabric.

Step 4: Sew Shorts Hemline

Sew along the bottom folded edges of the shorts legs.

Step 5: Sew the Top

Sew the sides of the top together and add the straps. To make the front fit properly across the bust, create a vertical curved line at each breast area.

I also added some of the crystal trim to the top under the straps for more flair!

Step 6: Add Zipper

I later decided to add a zipper to the back of the top, making it way easier to put on and take off.

All Done

You now have a sweat shorts and crop top set that you can dress up or down, pair with sneakers or heels and show off your sewing skills. Thanks for checking out this tutorial!
